Canyon’s Commitment to Children

10/06/11 Gorinchem, The Netherlands – At Canyon we feel it is our responsibility, as a corporation, to take initiatives that will positively contribute to the world around us. Children are our future, and we believe in a world in which every child has the right to survival, protection, development and participation.

It was announced last fall that Canyon was committed to donate 5% of profits made from sales of the Limited Edition to a child aid project, with the hope to give children a chance in society and to make a lasting, long term difference on a community. “Such project is an excellent opportunity for Canyon to empower underprivileged children and to positively contribute to their future. It is a cause that is very close to our heart”, confirms Catherine Lazure-Guinard, Communications Manager.

Early this year, Canyon was pleased to not only be able to contribute to one but two projects. Indeed, the money gathered for children exceeded expectations, and Canyon was able to complete classrooms for the Green Valley School in Uganda, as well as to provide clean water for a remote mountain school in Thailand.

“We are proud to contribute to the well-being of children and their family”, said Geert van Dijk, VP Sales & Marketing at Canyon. “Whether it is by providing clean water, access to education or shelter, we are committed to make a difference on a community.”

Canyon carefully selects organizations and projects that are fully integrated in local culture and structures, in areas such as health care, education, safe water, housing and family support. Partnering with Net4Kids Aid Foundation for this exciting project was a logical choice for Canyon.

The Dutch non-profit organization helped Canyon with its mission to help getting children off the streets and provide them with opportunities for a better future. Thanks to Net4Kids’s model, Canyon will have the opportunity to be directly involved with sponsored projects, and to follow progress made on a regular basis. “We stand for a personal approach, with transparency and accountability. Projects recently completed:

Green Valley School in Uganda
This project helps orphans and widows by offering them education and a lasting future. Residential areas are also built on the school premises; meaning over 500 needy children can also have a safe home. The school will also provide children with daily meals and school uniforms.

Clean water for a mountain school in Thailand

In collaboration with the Samsara Foundation, Canyon collaborated to the installation of a water purification machine, and a cement water collecting tank to store the rainwater during the rainy season to use in the dry season. Children studying at the school now have access to clean drinking water.

Po nekaj letih premora se je vrnilo razvpito tekmovanje Support your local DJ, ki letos praznuje svojo peto reinkarnacijo. Predtekmovanje letos poteka v spremenjeni obliki, saj se je glasovanje za izbor finalistov v celoti preselilo na splet. Ker se glasovanje zaključi 18. maja 2011 ob polnoči, imate do tega datuma še možnost, da s svojimi glasovi vplivate, kdo od domačih izbrancev bo 10. junija v ljubljanski diskoteki Inbox nastopil ob boku uveljavljenih gostov. Na technu bosta svoje veščine in trike razkazovala naš stari znanec iz Anglije Paul Langley in domači technomag Peter B., na fusion plesišču pa bosta nasvete delila Nemec Ronski Speed in slovenski trance-o-matic Elyksir.

Finalni izbor bo potekal po že uveljavljenem konceptu, tako da bodo finalisti nastopili v t.i. "prime-time" terminu, glasovanje pa bo potekalo v drugi polovici večera. Kot protiutež navijaškemu glasovanju bo svoje delo opravila tudi strokovna komisija, tako da se bodo glasovi ljudstva in glasovi komisije na koncu sešteli. A group of thieving pigs has stolen the birds’ eggs, making them, understandably, pretty pissed off. They want them back, but apparently the only way to do this is to use themselves as pilots who smash down the pigs’ defenses and ultimately destroy the pigs.

The birds come in indifferent shapes and sizes and they all have different talents. Some lay explosive eggs, others can boomerang round a target and the little blue ones, weirdly, can split into three separate smaller birds.

If you can’t get enough of the game, Angry birds is having also special editions as RIO and Angry bird Season.

Apple’s much-awaited white iPhone 4 will finally be made available this spring, reports published by Bloomberg and Reuters claim.

The white version of Apple’s flagship smartphone was originally introduced by chief executive Steve Jobs in June last year. The white iPhone 4’s release was slated for July last year, but some manufacturing issues delayed its release.

The company said that the white iPhone 4 was more challenging to manufacture that previously thought.

We all know Red Bull for there extreme sports and......they found something new (started in 2010): Red Bull Cliff diving.

The competition kicked off in March in Rapa Nui (CL) followed by Mexico (Yucatán) in April. The first stop on European soil takes place in Greece (Athens) in May, followed by France (La Rochelle) and Italy (Malcesine) in successive months. After a trip to the United States (Boston) in August, the grand final is hosted in the Ukraine (Yalta) on September 4.

Cliff diving sounds simple -- you'd think that all you need is a swimsuit and a suitable ledge to hurl yourself off into the water. However this thrilling and dangerous sport takes gymnastic flexibility, dedication and an insane dose of guts as the pros dive from a death-defying 26 metres or higher into the sea, the equivalent of an eight-storey building. The purpose is to make as many 'nice' moves during the flight.

Last weekend the second stop of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series was in Mexico's Cenote Ik Kil.

We read today an article by Adam Dachis for Lifehacker about using emoticons in your emails.

It is an interesting topic. Are you among those ponctuating your text with smiles, winks and the like, or do you consider them silly?

Here is what Dachis thinks:

"Language is a means of communication, buts its only as effective as the person using it. Without inflection and emotion, language loses a lot, making text communication one of the poorest forms. While emoticons can be informal, they may actually be the best way of bringing additional meaning to your emails."

Scott McDowell, writing for productivity and ideas blog The 99 Percent, argues:

"Until keyboards can actually perceive the emotional content of our digital messages (not so far off!), emoticons may be the simplest method of clarifying tone. I've had to let go of my own perception that emoticons are silly. They may currently be our best tool for elevating the emotional clarity of digital messages."

Obviously you don't want to go overboard with emoticons, but a smiley face here and there never hurts. It's never going to replace a an honest, human smile but it may be your best text-based alternative.

Valentines day is held on February 14 and on this day we celebrate love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after a Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD :).

On valentines day it is traditional to show our love for each other by presenting flowers, chocolates, gifts (wrapped in heart shaped packages), and sending greeting/Valentines cards. It also is common that you send a gift and a Valentines card to you secret lover.

In the UK, just under half the population spend money on their Valentines and around 1.3 billion pounds is spent yearly on cards, flowers, chocolates and other gifts, with an estimated 25 million cards being sent. The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 190 million valentines are sent each year in the US. Half of those valentines are given to family members other than husband or wife, usually to children. An estimated 15 million e-valentines were sent in 2010.

Old Valentine traditions:
- Hundreds of years ago in England, many children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day. They went singing from home to home. One verse they sang was:

- In Wales, England, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons. The decoration meant, "You unlock my heart!"

- In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.

- In some countries, a young woman may receive a gift of clothing from a young man. If she keeps the gift, it means she will marry him.

- Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, As you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you were saying when the stem fell off.

- If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have.

Apple Inc. has started manufacturing a new version of its iPad tablet computer with a built-in camera and faster processor, said people familiar with the matter.
The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the first model, these people said. It will have at least one camera on the front of the device for features like video-conferencing, but the resolution of the display will be similar to the first iPad, these people said. It will also have more memory and a more powerful graphics processor, they said.

It is no surprise that there are a lot of apps at MacWorld. However, what is surprising was just how not terribly magical and revolutionary most were. Thankfully, there were a few standouts. We've shifted through the uninspiring to bring you these interesting apps which are all available now or will be in the App Store within the next few months.

•Alawar Hamlet: The Bard's Hamlet in pretty much name only, this game is filled with brain teasers and puzzles that you must complete as Hamlet in order to save Ophelia. Adorable graphics and challenging puzzles, what more could one want?
•Snoring U: This app strives to settle the debate of who was actually snoring last night and also help the snoring to end. The app works by monitoring sleep and when it detects snoring it says a pre-recorded message like, "turn over you're snoring again."

•TouchUp: Quick and easy photo editing for the iPad is nothing terribly new, but what we did love about this app is the impressive zoom control for detail work and the burn and dodge tool.

•Peterson Birds: Everything you love about the trusty guidebook in app form, we love the combination of sound and images. This app brings back memories of geeking out over the guidebook.

•Appetites & iCookbook: Two very different but interesting cooking apps. iCookbook uses recipes from Big Food and has a cool voice control feature allowing you to advance your recipe without having to tap. Appetites has a more home grown approach to food with recipes coming from food bloggers who have recorded video of themselves cooking.

•PDF Expert: Although the PDF app marketplace is rather large, this one does stand out with its UI, annotation, and editing controls.

•iTap Mobile: This app allows you to control your Mac or Windows computer from your IOS device and has gesture support.

•SkySafari: This mobile astronomy app has gorgeous graphics much like one of our favorite apps. This app has a Lite & Pro version, the Pro version allows for connection and control of a telescope with an additional accessory.

•NatureScape: Gorgeous sound imagery is contained in this app. Once we put the headphones on it added a peaceful layer to the show floor that was quite welcoming. Much better than other white noise sorts of apps.

•DK Guides: We've always been huge fans of the cutaways and love to see them on the iPad. We also love the neighborhood guides and think they are the most friendly of the travel guidebooks to explore.

Viktor Milushev

In December 2010 Bulgaria organized a Photo shoot with the hip hop dancer Viktor Milushev. The pictures looked alreadt fantastic but now we also have some cool videos.

Viktor Milushev is a professional dancer and teaches hip-hop dancing in the biggest street dance school in Bulgaria – „Street Dance School The Center”. He is now studying “Dance Theatre” at New Bulgarian University. During the summer of 2010 he had a 2-month dance specialization at the USA. This experience helped him to win the Street Dance Battle, organized by Canyon on 9 September as part of the big Canyon Graffiti Fest. As a winner, Viktor received a sponsorship by Canyon and became its endorser for Bulgaria. As part of this Viktor did a recent photoshoot where he not only showed the Canyon Graffiti Limited Edition, but also presented some rather difficult dance moves.

Hip Hop Contest

Last week the 8th edition finals took of the 'Ultimatum pentru Arta is a national Hip-Hop contest (bands and MCs)' in the Elephant Pub, Bucharest (historical centre).

In the Finals the contestants interpreted two tracks they have previously prepared and they also had to do an improvisation of a couple of verses (or a stanza) based on a given instrumental on the spot. The winners have been established 30% by the public and 70% by the jury, the final grades being the average of the accumulated points.

There were 10 contestants who played in the finals and in the end three winners:

Graffiti Event in Russia

Last month Russia Launched the Graffiti Limited Edition during 3 events. We sponsored an extreme bicycle race "summerKAT: Limited Edition" an Dual branding event with Akella and GameGurru to promote the game Gothic 4 and we were present at the exhibition in Ogromir 2010.

The bicycle event took place around the metro station Orehove in the Park Zone. During this event more than 500 persons participated and even more spectators were watching the whole spectacle.

After this event we branded an event with Akella and GameGurru to promote the game Gothic 4. In the shop Eldorado on Bratislavskaya metro station more than 250 visitors came, participated and watched the event. People were able to play games, created their own Graffiti Products and win spectacular prices as the Limited Edition products.

And last weekend we were attending an exhibition at the All-Russia Exhibition Centre. The exhibition was visited by approximately 100 000 persons. The Graffiti Limited Edition products were highlighted in two stands. During the days visitors could win cool Limited Edition products.

Russia, many thanks for creating these events, we are looking forward to the next one.

Canyon Graffiti Festival Latvia 23-10-10

On Saturday 23rd of October, a Canyon graffiti fest was held near the shopping center Elkor Plaza in Riga, Latvia. From 13h to 19h, between 2000 and 3000 people attended the event despite the cold and rain.

People walked around the numerous ‘cubes’ with artwork, enjoying the live music DJs and Ozols, one of the most popular musicians in Latvia. A total of 11 top graffiti professionals in the Baltics took part in the event, as well as another 11 graffiti artists who competed for the Grand Prix, a voucher of $200 for Canyon products from our partner Elkor. The theme for the competition was : Think positive! It was not just a theme for graffiti artists, but also to appeal to all Latvian people.

People could also try to make their own graffiti, or take part into the ‘Graffiti Shoes’ contest, where people had to draw and design shoes. Moreover, six cars among the 80 submitted were able to receive a graffiti makeover. Of course, the cool graffiti products from Canyon were also presented at a special stand.

A few weeks earlier, a special webpage was created to announce the event (www.canyongraffiti.lv), where artists could register themselves for the competion, as well as car owners who wishedtheir car was covered with graffiti.

Kiwie, one of the winners of the Canyon Urban Art contest held last spring also attended the event.

Canyon was proud to be sponsored by Adidas and Elkor for this event.
